Heterogeneous Networks, Small Cells in 3GPP

Dual connectivity

Dual connectivity (DC) allow UE to utilise resources from two eNBs. UE operating in DC shall have at least two bearers, one with each eNB ! This is different than in CA where one bearer at L2 level shall use more than one (component) carrier at PHY level.

Refer 36.300 [9] , sections 4.9, 6.5 (L2), and 7.6 (RRC). Refer 36.872 [13] for comparative results.

SIPTO

Service continuity requirements were added (for IP sessions when UE move from HeNBs to macro cells).

Release 13

Under Release 13 [16] , SIPTO related checks (especially related to service continuity) were added. Also, items related to Dual connectivity, postponed from Release 12 were done.
