Release 8/9 ICIC could be called frequency domain ICIC as it worked on PRBs.
Release 10 [3] added time domain ICIC under feature name of eICIC (Enhanced Inter-Cell Interference Coordination).
It worked on subframes, known as Almost Blank Subframes (ABS).
ABS information is sent from Macro cell to Small cell.
During ABS subframes, Macro cell eNB schedules control channels with reduced power.
Small cell eNB schedules DL data in ABS subframes for its CRE UEs (CRE - Cell Range Extension UEs).
CA allows two or more "component carriers" to be aggregated at MAC-PHY level.
Further, Control signaling for DL and UL resource assignment (PDCCH) could be on one component carrier whereas
actual resource (PDSCH) could be on different component carrier.
This allows PHY signaling on macro cell and data on micro cell, refer Case 4 in Annex J of TS 36.300 [9] .
More information about CA in 36.814 [10] , 36.300 [9] , sections 6.4 (MAC) and 7.5(RRC).
Relay node acts as eNB, but instead of connecting to EPC, it actually connect wirelessly to another eNB (Donor eNB)
(over Uu interface).
In addition to eNB functionality, RN will be required to have partial UE functionalities (for it to connect to DeNB).
Refer 36.300 [9] , section 4.7 and CR RP-100562.
Under this feature, it is possible for UEs, operating in HeNBs, to have access to both local network and Internet via local network.
At HeNB level, instead of traffic flowing to operator's network (backhaul), traffic is diverted to local network.
Refer 23.829 [14] for more details.
