5G Intent

Simpler and combined signalling and data planes

Critical device requirement for machine communication (especially sensors) is longer battery life (weeks to months). Also, the amount of data is likely to be lesser. A much simpler and reliable protocol is needed for connection setup and transmission.

Offloading to unlicensed bands

Use of un-licensed band of 5.9 GHz is already been proposed in 3GPP Rel 14 [13] for V2X communication. This reduce the requirements on licensed spectrum.

In fact, on similar lines, interworking of 3GPP with WLAN (WiFi) shall help too. This too was already introduced in 3GPP Rel 12 [14] .

Conclusion

We may not have covered all aspects of 5G intent. However, it does give us a fair idea of where 5G is heading: introduction of machine communication, attending field aspects at design level, careful use of bands above 6 GHz, dynamic networks (plus combining and/or using existing RATs) - all with a aim of achieving connected world with wireless access everywhere and to everyone and everything (almost !).

5G comes under IMT-2020 and deployment is expected from year 2020; refer [7] for roadmap and detailed information about IMT-2020.
