5G Intent

Real time (tactile internet), VR/AR

To achieve real time responses - as in case of virtual or augmented reality, we shall need much lower latencies and with no interruptions.

If we look at user trends closely, DL-UL ratio too have increased in favour of DL. We expect 5G to have flexible allocations for distribution of radio resources in DL and UL.

In conclusion

Based on user trends, we may say - "we shall need higher data speeds, lower latencies, more stable connectivity (high data speeds maintained), and support for higher mobility compared to LTE". Note that LTE-Advanced do satisfy requirements in few cases; it shall be interesting to see how LTE and LTE-Advanced is incorporated in 5G.

Field observations and trends

A way to ensure stable connection at all times and at all places is to look at field cases more closely and exploit its characteristics.

For example, in outdoor cases like football or cricket stadium, higher carrier frequencies (above 6 GHz) work best due to short line-of-sight nature of the field and availability of higher bandwidths. We shall need latest advances in higher band RF technologies to make this access cost effective and form factor compliant.

Shopping malls

Shopping mall is indicative of indoor places where large number of users are present in smaller areas. Obvious term that comes to mind is connection density i.e. connections per unit of area. Another related parameter is data speed per unit of area or capacity density. This field case require high connection density, high capacity density and requirement is achieving these parameters assuming lower mobility. Though mainly line of sight coverage, there is likelihood of RF blockages; so we expect RF to have certain level of penetration characteristic.

Concerts and stadiums

Though connection/capacity densities are likely to be higher (relative to shopping mall case), almost all of the coverage is line of sight. Field could be indoor or outdoor.

City centres (or commercial places)

This field case is similar to shopping mall; connection/capacity densities are similar, however in the outdoor field.

Office zones

Office zones are indicative of high rise and glass wall buildings. Considering tinted/coated glass blocks the transmission, this field case present a problem of mobility from outdoor to indoor and vice versa, . Also, how do we ensure same connection characteristics at higher floors ?
