Traffic characteristics here would be very low/no mobility, periodic transmission of small amounts of data,
high connection density, spread over wide area, and above all, long (device) battery life.
Periodicity could go up till number of days or weeks.
Requirements on 5G would be to provide wider coverage, highly energy efficient protocols, and support for massive number of connections.
Public safety in traffic require vehicles to communicate with each other.
Connectivity shall necessarily be wireless.
Vehicle to vehicle (V2V), vehicle to infrastructure (V2I), and vehicle to pedestrian (V2P) are collectively called V2X.
Communication mainly deal with reliable and periodic exchange of small amount of data in high velocity difference scenarios.
Requirements for V2X communication would be high reliability, low latency (as low as 20ms), and very high mobility (300 kmph).
VR/AR and V2X (passive) require lower latency and highly reliable communication.
However there are "very very real time" scenarios like autonomous driving and remote surgeries where
communication must be (extreme) highly reliable (error rate of 1 minus 10-5) and with very low latencies (<= 1ms).
So far, we observed:
1) New key parameters like connection density and capacity density are to be considered in requirements.
2) User (human) and Machine communications have different requirements and so possibly require separation in design.
3) There is third category of "very very real time communication", which could possibly require separate attention.
4) Design should consider possible deployment scenarios to achieve generic requirements.
5) Dynamic, flexible (includes scalable), and energy efficient networks would be needed.
6) As some of requirements are already fulfilled by previous generation technologies (especially LTE and GSM),
rather than making 5G compatible to GSM and LTE, 5G design may have to accommodate LTE and GSM technologies.
7) As trends indicate continued rise in the requirement numbers, it is desirable that 5G is made "future friendly".
For example, it should be possible to "add" newer RF technology by design.
8) Scenarios/requirements now include terrestrial connectivity to airplanes.
