Article
LTE Allocations explained
by
Samir Amberkar
(published on 23-Jun-2012)

Abstract: This article explains 3GPP Release 8 LTE resource allocations. Reader is expected to have overall knowledge of LTE protocol architecture. You may refer introductory articles on LTE here.

One approach to study LTE allocations is to directly start with PHY [36.211/2/3]/MAC [36.321] specs and talk about DCI, resource allocation types etc. Another approach would be to first set up a perspective of LTE protocol architecture, allocation requirements, and then look at the actual mechanisms of allocations as handled by MAC and PHY. We would take the second approach.

Background

Resource element and Resource block

Below diagram shows basic PHY organisation for Normal CP scheme. Total number of resource blocks within time period of a slot range from 6 to 110, giving bandwidth range of 1 MHz till 20 MHz [36.211:UL-5.2, DL-6.2]. Synchronisation signals, Reference signals, and Physical channels are mapped to resource elements. This mapping is preset (e.g. synchronisation signals) or dynamic (e.g. PDSCH).

Please refer examples of 1.4 MHz FDD DL configuration and UL configuration for more clarity on PHY organisation (refer Annexure A.1/2).
