Abstract:
In this article, author attempts to calculate theoretical data rates for LTE based on 3gpp Release 8 specifications.
Intent
3GPP LTE PHY specifications talks about frequency/bandwidth, time, modulation, coding and other PHY parameters. Is it possible to calculate theoretical data rate values based on these specifications ? Let us make an attempt to do it in an incremental way. It is assumed that the reader is aware of MAC-PHY (Transport block based) interface concepts (UMTS or LTE). Reader may refer UMTS - Transport format as in introduction to these concepts.
PHY specifications are listed in References. For more accuracy, references are also noted throughout the article. Convention used is [Spec number:Section number]. For example [36.211:6.2] imply "3GPP TS 36.211, section 6.2". A click on Spec number will take you to 3GPP site where the latest release 8 version would be available.
For introduction to LTE PHY, you may refer LTE - basic PHY structure.
Instantaneous data rate
For Normal CP, one resource element consists of CP and information bits spanning 66.7 µs (refer diagram below). So the data rate per resource element - we can call it Instantaneous data rate - would be = (number of bits per resource element) / (66.7 µs) bps.
