Estimation and Planning
Usually done at conception stage, Estimation & Planning play a important role in deciding the 4 coordinates of project. Constraints imposed by (program) management, effort/complexity analysis done by SMEs (Subject Matter Expert) of requirements, past project data, own experience & intuition, (calculated) risk analysis forms inputs for PM to estimate and plan the parameters related to cost, timeline, resources (HR, infrastructure etc.), risk etc.
Scope management
Scope being one of the coordinates of project square, PM should keep a close watch on scope of project. Tasks done outside the scope may mean tasks missed out in planning (planning errors) or possibly project scope getting expanded without impact analysis done on cost/schedule.
Product/Services roadmap management
Whether product based project (e.g. software development, new line of cosmetic products) or service based project (e.g. insurance product call centre, software services project), a good program management will make sure that the project has clear roadmap or high level plan for next 3 cycles of development. Project Manager makes sure that such plan exists and followed or tracked.
Sales/Marketing
During Conception stage of the project, Project Manager work with Sales/Marketing team for project intent clarity, requirement analysis, project approval etc. Even in later stages, it is important for PM to remain in touch with Sales/Marketing team.
Possibly just over cup of coffee, but Project Manager can gain very important information about "external situation" like market situation, changes in customer outlook, market trends etc. The situation which has resulted in conception of project idea change over time and it is more likely that the project would face challenges or changes as it progresses. By keeping regular contacts (possibly informal) with Sales/Marketing teams, a good PM can keep project prepared in advance for likely changes.
